The Diverse Uses Of A Communications Satellite

If someone said that the internet, telephones, military communication and civil aviation, amongst other things, were all unwanted byproducts of the Cold War, very few people would not be surprised. But that is what has happened in humanity's past. The race to get a man to the Moon also involved flinging thousands of satellites into near and far orbit above the world, with some unexpected benefits. Many of those benefits are the result of a communications satellite.

The thousands of objects that circle the world are directly responsible for navigating it in cars, plane and lorries. Train, plane, ship and lorry communication also takes place because of the existence of satellite communications. These magical objects which go around this earth are incredibly useful in a variety of industries.

Communication is not the only string to their bow, either. Precise geolocation can be assessed using the self same technology. Simple trigonometry is the way to do so. By triangulating a position on earth and at two orbiting satellites, someone or something can be placed to within a fraction of an inch. This is used in navigational technology, allowing ships and cars (as well as planes) to find their way to a location smoothly.

It is the communication and contact sector which is most important, however. Without this sort of technology, planes would be meeting and crashing in mid air; ships would be sunk and cars would crash. A world without air traffic controllers, for example, would be one which would rapidly devolve into death, destruction and total chaos. A dependable link to talk on is necessary.

Even personal usage finds that to be the case. Whenever someone makes an international call from one side of the world to another, satellites come into play. A person's vocal inflections are transformed into hard data - a voice signal. The voice signal is beamed up into orbit and back down again within a fraction of a nanosecond.

So good has this technology become that the time taken is almost negligible. Sometimes, when it does err slightly, can the delay be heard or seen. It is most often seen in television broadcasts from a remote area. Without this technology, news groups and television companies could not do what they do.

The regular news broadcasts would be lacking in guests. They would need to be flown to the main studio, rather than being placed in front of a remote camera and talked to - all via satellite. The world would be totally different; news would come out much slower, and no one would be able to talk to someone else as readily as they can today.

The use of a communications satellite is therefore integral. People take it for granted. But they should not. These items are vitally important to the modern world, and the modern world cannot do without them. So many things people use, including their phones, televisions and transport networks, would simply not exist or collapse into disrepair and disorder. This technology is vital.
